Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls uses three distinct mounting platforms across their residential line, and the welding or fabrication fix depends on which one is on your gate. The TSS1 and TDS2 series (their standard single and dual swing openers) use a 2-inch square steel arm bracket that bolts through a welded post plate. The AXWK and DXP heavy-duty kits step up to a 3-inch reinforced bracket with gusseted corners. The newer GC and BGC slide-gate carriers use a different entirely, a rolling trolley mount that rarely needs welding but often needs a custom-fabricated receiver if the original channel bends.

To identify yours, check the silver data label on the motor housing. The series code is the first three characters. If the label is sun-faded, which happens fast on south-facing gates in Fremont’s dry summers, measure the bracket width at the post connection. Two-inch means TSS/TDS platform; three-inch means AXWK/DXP. We fabricate to either spec in our shop, and we keep 2-inch post plates in stock for same-day replacement. For the heavy-duty 3-inch units, we typically need four hours to cut and weld the gusseted version. Signs Your Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate arm droops or binds at mid-travel. The welded post bracket has cracked at the root pass, usually from repeated stress as the gate weight shifts. On older Fremont installations, we see this where the original installer skipped a back-weld on the inside corner.
• You hear metal-on-metal grinding when the motor starts. The bracket has shifted enough that the actuator arm is no longer parallel to the gate leaf. The Ghost Controls limit switch tries to compensate until it can’t, and then the motor stalls against bent steel.
• The post itself wobbles in the ground. This is not always a welding problem, but it becomes one fast. DIY or Call Us?

There is a safe middle ground here, and then there is the point where a grinder and a 110-volt welder from the hardware store make things worse. You can safely check: whether the bracket bolts are tight (a 9/16-inch socket, checked with the gate in manual release), whether the post is solid in the ground, and whether the arm is parallel to the gate leaf when closed. Document what you find with your phone. That photo is useful when you call.

What goes wrong with DIY welding on gate brackets: the heat from a small MIG unit does not penetrate 7-gauge steel properly, so the weld looks fine and fails in six months. Post-bracket alignment requires the gate to be supported level while you weld; most homeowners skip this and the bracket sets with built-in stress. And if your Ghost Controls system is under warranty, a non-certified weld can void coverage on the actuator arm if the bracket failure damages the motor mount.
