Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Fremont Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Mighty Mule-compatible keypad and intercom repairs in Fremont for most FM200, FM500, and MM560 series systems, with typical installed pricing running $280-$520 depending on whether the issue is a surface keypad, a wired intercom station, or a full wireless entry kit replacement. Same-day service is available when the part is on our truck, which it usually is for the common Mighty Mule keypad models we see fail in Fremont’s older Ardenwood and Glenmoor installations.

Most homeowners discover the problem when the keypad stops accepting the PIN, the intercom produces static or no audio, or the gate simply stops responding to any entry command while the remote still works. That last detail matters. If the remote opens the gate but the keypad does not, the failure is almost certainly isolated to the entry device, not the control board or the motor.

Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To

Mighty Mule has used three distinct keypad and intercom footprints across its residential line, and matching the right one saves a return trip. The FM200 and FM500 series gates from roughly 2012-2019 typically shipped with the RKPW wireless keypad or the MMTC wired keypad. The MM560 and newer swing-gate operators moved to a slightly different frequency protocol and a revised keypad housing with a weather-sealed membrane. The intercom line includes the MULE-200 wireless intercom base station and the older MMTC wired call box, which we still encounter in Fremont’s 1980s-era courtyard communities off Mowry Avenue.

To identify your part, check the label inside the keypad battery compartment or on the intercom base station’s underside. The model prefix tells us which protocol board to bring. For keypads, we also measure the mounting-hole pattern: 3.25 inches center-to-center on the RKPW, 2.875 inches on the older MMTC surface mount. That half-inch difference will reject an otherwise compatible keypad if the bracket is not swapped.

We carry both OEM Mighty Mule keypads and quality aftermarket equivalents from Linear and DoorKing that speak the same 433 MHz frequency. The aftermarket units typically run 15-20 percent less and carry the same one-year part warranty. For intercoms, we generally recommend OEM replacement because the pairing protocol between base station and handset is proprietary, and we’ve seen aftermarket intercoms drop pairing after Fremont’s winter storm fronts pass through.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
  • Keypad accepts PIN but gate does not move. This usually points to a failed relay in the keypad’s transmitter board. The keypad thinks it sent the signal, but the gate operator never received it. We verify with a frequency tester on site before replacing anything.
  • Intercom produces loud static or cuts out mid-conversation. The MULE-200 wireless base station is prone to RF interference from nearby Wi-Fi extenders and baby monitors. If repositioning the base does not clear it, the 2.4 GHz transceiver module inside the intercom is degrading. We see this most often in Fremont’s denser townhome clusters where twenty networks overlap.
  • Keypad buttons require hard presses or multiple tries. The membrane switch layer beneath the buttons absorbs moisture over time, especially on south-facing gates in Fremont’s sun. Once the conductive traces oxidize, replacement is the only fix. Cleaning helps for a week, then fails again.
  • Keypad display is dim or blank despite fresh batteries. The voltage regulator on the keypad’s logic board has failed. New batteries read 6 volts, but the board is not stepping that down to run the display. This is a board-level repair we do not recommend; the replacement keypad is more reliable.
  • Gate opens randomly without any input. A stuck relay or corrupted rolling-code memory in the keypad can transmit phantom open commands. This is a security issue, not just a nuisance. We treat these calls as priority and carry the replacement keypad pre-programmed to a fresh code set.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range in Fremont What’s Included
Mighty Mule wireless keypad replacement (RKPW or equivalent) $280-$360 Keypad, frequency match to operator, new PIN setup, weather-seal check, photo documentation
Mighty Mule wired keypad replacement (MMTC or equivalent) $320-$420 Keypad, low-voltage wiring test and repair if damaged, conduit integrity check, photo documentation
Wireless intercom base station replacement (MULE-200) $380-$520 Base station, handset re-pairing, range test, interference survey, photo documentation
Full keypad + intercom combo replacement $580-$740 Both devices, integration testing, unified code setup, photo documentation

What drives the range: wiring condition, mounting surface material (stucco requires longer anchors and more time), and whether the existing low-voltage run to the keypad has been damaged by landscaping or rodent activity. We see chewed wiring regularly in Fremont’s older Glenmoor properties where ivy covers the gate posts.

Under Haven Standard Clause 1, the flat price is written and handed to you before any work starts. The price you approve is the price on the invoice. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation and the part. Under Clause 4, you receive a photographed record of the old part, the new installation, and any wiring adjustments before we leave.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one safe check a homeowner can make: replace the keypad batteries with fresh alkalines and verify the battery contacts are not corroded. Green crust on the contacts will block current even with new batteries. A pencil eraser and contact cleaner can clear light corrosion.

Beyond that, we do not recommend DIY replacement. The low-voltage wiring to a Mighty Mule keypad runs through the gate post or underground conduit, and we have found live 120V circuits improperly spliced into those conduits by previous installers. The intercom pairing procedure requires accessing the operator’s learn button while the gate is in standby mode, and a mis-timed button press can clear all remotes from memory. We carry the programming sequence for each Mighty Mule revision on our tablets, and we test every keypad transmission with a frequency meter before we sign off.

If you are unsure which model you have, text us a photo of the label and the mounting bracket. We will name the part before we dispatch.
