Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite has produced several keypad and intercom lines over the years, and the part you need depends on which generation is mounted at your gate. The older Elite EK series (EK-1, EK-2, EK-3) used a single-piece membrane keypad with a two-wire intercom loop, while the Elite QZ series moved to a detachable intercom head with a separate four-wire communication bus. The current Elite SL series integrates keypad and intercom into one weather-sealed housing with an RS-485 data line back to the control board.

To identify yours, check the label inside the keypad housing or on the rear of the intercom module. The model prefix tells us which backplane, membrane, or full assembly to bring. We carry both OEM Elite parts and quality aftermarket equivalents from Linear and DoorKing that cross-reference to Elite specs. Signs Your Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

• Keypad beeps but gate doesn’t respond. The membrane is sending a signal, but the intercom or control board isn’t receiving it. Usually traces back to a cracked ribbon cable or moisture intrusion at the backplane connector, something we see often in Fremont after winter fog season.
• Intercom audio cuts in and out or sounds underwater. The speaker or microphone element is degrading, or the shielded twisted-pair running to the house has developed a ground fault. In older EK installations, that cable run is often direct-buried and fails where it passes through planter beds.
• Some buttons work, others don’t. Individual membrane switches have cracked. Elite keypads use a carbon-pill contact design that wears flat after roughly 8-12 years of daily use in California’s UV exposure.
• Gate opens with the code, but there’s no voice communication. The keypad relay is fine, but the intercom module has lost power or the two-wire loop is open. On QZ-series units, this often means the intercom head itself is dead while the keypad portion still functions.
• Keypad is completely dark, no backlight or beep. Power supply failure at the keypad, or the low-voltage line from the gate operator has been compromised. We check voltage at the keypad first, it’s usually 16-24 VAC on Elite systems, and work backward from there.

The range depends on three things: how much of the assembly has failed, whether we need to pull new cable, and whether your existing mounting post box is intact or needs re-sealing. We quote the full price in writing before any work starts, under Haven Standard Clause 1. That price includes the part, labor, testing, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the intercom fails again within a year, we make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check whether the keypad has power with a basic multimeter, 16-24 VAC at the terminal block. You can also verify that the gate operator itself is working with a remote or manual release, which tells you the problem is isolated to the keypad or intercom loop.

Where DIY goes wrong is inside the housing. Elite keypads run low-voltage, but they’re often fed from a transformer sharing a junction with 120 VAC house power. We’ve found homeowners who bridged the wrong terminals and took out the control board. The intercom wiring is also easy to mis-terminate, a reversed pair on an RS-485 line will fault the whole bus and cost more than the original repair.
