Ghost Controls Access Control Installation: The Fremont Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Ghost Controls-compatible access control hardware across Fremont, with most residential keypad, remote receiver, or control board replacements running $280-$620 installed, depending on whether we’re matching a single-button remote station or a full multi-user keypad with smartphone integration. Same-day service is available when the part is on our truck, and we carry the most common Ghost Controls control boards, remote receivers, and keypad modules for the TSS, DTP, and AX series. Most Fremont homeowners realize something’s wrong when the gate stops responding to remotes, the keypad accepts the code but won’t trigger the opener, or the system starts working only in direct sunlight and fails after dusk - all signs that the control logic, not the motor, is the problem.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls organizes its gate automation into three main series, and the access control components are not interchangeable between them. The TSS1 and TSS1XL swing-gate kits use the GHOST CONTROLS Premium Remote Receiver (model AXWK) and the matching AX series keypads. The DTP1 and DTP1XL dual-gate systems share the same receiver but mount it differently, with the antenna lead routed through a longer harness to clear the center-mounted control box. The newer AXWV Wi-Fi module and the premium AXP1 phone-link keypad are backward-compatible with any Ghost Controls system built after 2018, but the pre-2018 control boards lack the firmware header for Wi-Fi pairing, so we verify the board revision before quoting a smart-upgrade.

We identify the right part three ways: the white label inside the control box that lists the PCB revision (look for “REV” followed by two digits), the part number stamped on the failed component itself, and the gate’s travel distance and weight rating, which tells us whether the original installer spec’d the standard or heavy-duty receiver. For keypads, we measure the cutout in the post or pillar, because Ghost Controls makes both a standard rectangular housing and a narrower slimline version, and the wrong one means either a gap or a re-cut masonry opening.

On OEM versus aftermarket: Ghost Controls does not sell its control boards or receivers through open distribution, so what we install is factory-original hardware sourced through authorized channels. For remote fobs, there are compatible aftermarket options, but we’ve seen frequency drift issues with third-party remotes in the 433 MHz band that Ghost Controls uses, especially in Fremont’s denser neighborhoods where garage door openers, security systems, and neighbor’s gates crowd the spectrum. We stock OEM remotes and receivers for that reason.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Access Control Installation Is Failing

Signs Your Ghost Controls Access Control Installation Is Failing
  • Remote works intermittently or only at close range. The receiver’s sensitivity is dropping, usually from moisture intrusion in the antenna housing or corrosion at the coax connection. In Fremont, we see this most often on gates within a quarter-mile of the bay, where salt air accelerates the antenna seal degradation.
  • Keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad’s output relay is firing, but the control board isn’t receiving the signal, or the board’s input buffer has failed. We test this by jumping the control board manually: if the gate runs, the board is fine and the keypad or wiring is the culprit.
  • System works in warm weather, fails in cold or damp conditions. The control board’s power supply capacitors are aging out, or there’s a cold-solder joint expanding and contracting. This is a board-level failure, not a programming issue, and it gets worse until it fails entirely.
  • Wi-Fi or phone-app connection drops repeatedly. The AXWV module’s internal antenna is degraded, or the module itself is overheating in a metal control box without ventilation. We’ve measured box temperatures over 140°F in direct Fremont summer sun, which is past the module’s rated operating limit.
  • Gate opens on its own at random times. The receiver is picking up stray signals, either from a failing crystal oscillator drifting frequency, or from a neighbor’s new opener on a close harmonic. We scan the local 433 MHz traffic with a spectrum analyzer to confirm before replacing anything.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Typical Installed Price (Fremont) Warranty
Remote receiver (AXWK or equivalent) $280-$380 1 year parts & labor
Keypad replacement (standard or slimline) $340-$480 1 year parts & labor
Control board swap (same series) $420-$620 1 year parts & labor
Wi-Fi module add or replace (AXWV) $180-$260 1 year parts & labor
Full access control upgrade (keypad + receiver + remotes) $680-$940 1 year parts & labor

The range depends on three things: whether the existing wiring harness is reusable (corroded connectors mean a new harness and longer labor), whether the mounting location needs modification, and whether we’re matching a single component or integrating multiple new devices. Before any work starts, we deliver a written price under Haven Standard Clause 1. That price is the price. We also photograph the existing installation, the wiring configuration, and the finished work - under Clause 4, the photo record goes to you and into our job file. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers everything: if the new receiver, keypad, or board doesn’t perform as specified, we make it right at no charge within the year.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. A homeowner can check the obvious: Is the control box getting 120V at the outlet? Is the low-voltage transformer warm to the touch? Are the antenna connections finger-tight? Are the remote batteries fresh? Document what you find - it saves us ten minutes on arrival.

What we don’t recommend: opening the control board enclosure to probe live 120V circuits, attempting to solder replacement capacitors, or drilling new keypad mounting holes in masonry without locating the rebar. Ghost Controls boards use surface-mount components, and the 24V accessory output can deliver enough current to damage the board if shorted. The receiver antenna, while low voltage, routes through the same harness as the line-voltage input; misidentifying conductors is how boards get fried. We’ve replaced three control boards in Fremont this year where the root cause was a DIY miswire, and the owner paid for the original part, the failed repair, and our fix. Name what you found, name what it costs, name what you left behind - that’s the habit, and it starts with knowing when to hand it off.
